In the ever present walk that is with the Lord, we find that the journey is daily. It is Him who gives us our worth. As a child growing I can remember times of gaining my father’s attention and finding so much satisfaction that I was able to spend some time with him. It wouldn’t take much, because in truth he wanted to spend time with me too. It was the natural relationship that took place. It wasn’t forced. It was a decision made daily. And it was those times where my father would instill a self worth in me.
Whether it was throwing around a football, baseball or basketball, the lesson was the same: “you can do anything you set your mind to do and study hard.” Maybe it was those days where he would be heading into work and take us kids to school, so we wouldn’t have to go on an hour and a half bus ride that morning. Or it could have been the days when he would umpire at the baseball game and call me out when it was clearly a ball! Or maybe it was the way he would always treat my mom and love on her. His love was clear in its human form. He felt a value of worth and tried his best to impart this unto his children.
In the same way, the Father defines the value of His children. First, He bridged the gap with the sacrifice of His only begotten Son, Jesus. Then, He gifted to those who would remain and come after, the Spirit of Jesus! In doing so, He gave us a value beyond the worth of a man. He gave us the value of a son and called us His own. We can see throughout the scriptures that God continuously redefines the limitations man has set. He calls the littlest kid out of the bunch and has the prophet anoint him to be king. God calls a broken down fisherman and tells him that he will be the rock that His church will be built upon. God also called a zesty, finger-pointing, judgmental man and knocks him off his high horse to become an essential apostle in carrying forth the gospel for the ages to come.
We can see that the value instilled in the individual, whether good or bad, did not limit God’s ability to redefine the man into what he was created to be. The way he was was not who he was. Many people from the past will remind you of who you were and try to set your value, but when you become born again, the Father in heaven takes over and sets a new value on your life!
What you were is not who you are today. You are beloved. You are a child of the king. You are a priest, a king, a prophet, a psalmist, a teacher, a leader, an encourager. You are an heir! You have promises awaiting your discovery!
Go and discover the One who has set you apart. You are valued. The men and women who enter your life can not label what God has called His own. If you don’t know, then just ask! He will show you your worth. Take a peak inside Isaiah 54 and you will find that those who come against you will not have a leg to stand on, because you are His!
Godspeed, The Journeyman
