the senses...

Of all the things that we possess in this human existence, we possess some very powerful gifts. These gifts enable us to experience life in ways that other parts of creation can not. All in all, we can claim to have five valuable senses. This is not to diminish those that have been created for a unique purpose and have amplified gifting with fewer senses. The Great Orchestrator has a special intention beyond the status quo!

Sight is the gift of vision from the collection of light as it reflects off of objects and beings. To look directly at the source could potentially blind a person. Secondly, we hear. Sound waves are received into the ear drum having been caused by vibrations that allow us to interpret what was generated. Next, the tongue was given receptors so we could discover flavor. Flavor of individual items allowing us to taste what we eat. Without missing a beat, the flavorful food also comes with a delightful scent. This scent is interpreted by the nose and helps combine the enjoyment of taste offering a two for one special. Finally, we can claim the gift of touch. Nerves built-in to the body send electrical impulses to the brain allowing us to know that some kind of physical relationship is happening. With this basic understanding let us step forward into God.

Man was created in the image of God. The first was Adam and he held a special relationship with his Creator that few ever experienced. He would walk and talk with the Lord in the garden. Thus establishing a personal relationship, one on one. Next, Moses knew God like no other. He looked upon the Lord and did not die, because God held back His direct gaze for Moses sake and this allowed Moses to complete his task.

Whispers in the night would awaken Samuel and he would learn to call back to God and listen. David would delight himself in the Lord and was invited to taste and see the goodness of the Lord. Solomon knew the scent of God and called Him the Rose of Sharron. John, Peter, James, Andrew, and the other apostles knew the voice, touch, smell, taste, and sight of the Bread of Life. They had in their grasps what others yearned for. They had God in their midst!

If they had God in their midst, then do we have him today? In deep relationships today, we often attribute intimacy with physical connection which does play its part. But it also goes beyond the touching climax of a union and hits a deeper realm. At least its supposed to. After the uniqueness and discovery portions are gone, we hit a wall and can become stagnant. Often we feel there is no more left to the union and sadly many end it there. But for the few who trudge on, something else occurs. Growth.

Yes, we grow into something more. The connections of the physical are still needed and should be prodded, but the union now can be experienced in new ways. The look of a lover can be understood. The gift of a special pastry or perfume can garner attention and affection. Listening to the day’s stories can often lead to words of understanding. A comforting hug can assure your partner they aren’t alone. These five senses are crucial in expanding your relationship.

Why are we hitting on this you ask? Because as man discovers love and fellowship with another being it allows both individuals to grow and become more than they could be on their own. It is necessary for growth. And we not only need growth and attraction with each other, but also our Father in heaven. We need to grow in relationship with Him. Jesus told as much. For a relationship to be successful, we need to utilize the senses we have for each other, and so it is with God.

Often in the beginning of a believers walk, you can find him zesty and zealous for his new found salvation and going to church to grow and be fed. But what happens after a bit of time, some of the discovery becomes repetitious. There isn’t much new and your fellowship grows cold. Life has crept in and stilled the flowing waters. But they don’t have to remain stagnant. Stir up your first love. Learn to communicate with God throughout the day. Sometimes it is the fresh smell of summertime honeysuckle, or the smell of the ocean air. Other times it can be a quietness that you share with him while relaxing in your recliner. You can also see it in a meal and a helping hand.

Take time this day and upcoming week to cultivate your relationship with Him! JESUS! Then wait for Him and take the time to say thank you. He loves you and desires a deeper walk with you more than you know! You can have it, just ask for it!

Godspeed, The Journeyman
