Raging storms. Earthquakes. Wars. Rumors of war. The sun darkened. Wow, sounds like were in the midst of the book of Revelation or maybe Matthew 24! Without question these are some exciting days! Whether you like it or not, the days are not dull and provide a glimpse into the nature of God. He spoke it, it will be done.
Captured up in a good novel, my nights are spent sitting on my couch, or rather in front of it, on the floor with a book of fiction in my hands. Its one that is written between historical events and provides an adventure that wraps around it. This particular one envelops the build out of the railroad at the turn of the 20th century just prior to the startup of World War I.
In it, the good guys chase the bad guys from coast to coast steadily tracking them down trying to keep them from sabotaging anything further on the progress of the nation’s railway system. It has turns, crunches, and action all captured in words. Not a picture to be found, save for a map or two… and one hand drawn railway bridge. The story bustles all the way through!
When we read, we activate parts of the brain that can’t be reached when watching television or playing a game. It induces our senses and triggers memories and establishes scenes as we watch the book unfold in our minds. It is something the more you do, the better it gets. And so it is with God.
The more we practice with God, the more we see Him. How do we do this? We spend time. Time in prayer, not just talking but listening. Yes, listening in the silence and waiting. It is one of the hardest things to do in the active world today. Being still and knowing that he is God (Psalm 46:10).
Truly, its in the stillness that we find Him. He communicates to us in ways that we understand. What works for me, may not stir you. What you see may not move me. But what is important is the fact that we are hearing, seeing, and being. Being what He created us to be. Children of the King. Heirs to heaven’s throne. All because of the sacrifice of Jesus and the gifting of His Spirit (Galatians 4: 6-7).
When the world is fluctuating all around, and wars and rumors of wars spread, turn your eyes heaven-ward and focus on the One who controls the 7 seas and causes the stars to shine in the night. He has you where you are needed. If you weren’t you would be moving. So in the stillness of the night call on Him while He can be found (Isaiah 55:6). He is waiting for you!
Godspeed, The Journeyman
Ps. Today’s story comes from the blessing of quietness. No internet. No TV. Just a night singing, praying, and listening.
