Can you hear him calling out? Does she mumble, “Mama”? As your gaze sets in you begin to watch your toddler twerk their bottom in the air and dare the impossible! What they have only ever witnessed or attempted by leaning on your hands, has become the moment of truth! The back straightens up high. The eyes set forward and gaze ahead. The stilts are locked into place and all that is left is the first step!
Much like a baby are we when it comes to God and His domain. As the Father waits patiently for us to grow from suckling babes, His patience is unending. It does not mean that He doesn’t want more for you and me, it just means He is patient. Even as we squirm and tussle in His arms, He may discipline us, but He doesn’t stop loving us. His love is never ending and precious (Psalm 36:7 NLT)! It is He who is our rock on which we stand and therefore can not be shaken (Psalm 62:2 NLT).
But Faith has to be tried and tested (James 1:3 NLT). It is action in an unknown step. A belief that if I move forward, I’ll be able to take another and another and another. Looking back to your toddler standing tall, his gaze of wonder turns to joy as his first step is met with his second. Your little girl just propelled herself from the edge of the doorway into your arms! Their joy is ever present as their smile and giddiness infects your heart. It was their Faith in knowing that I can do this that was proven true!
The next adventure begins as they now turn away from you to do it again. One more time to prove to all beyond any doubt that this walk of faith has been mastered. But wait is that a table in the middle of my path? Uh oh, how do I stop this? Is it with a clunk? Is it with a stumble and timber to the left? Or is it an abrupt halt, that sends me head first into the edge of… Yeap. It was then that He said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe (John 20: 27 ESV).”
Just like your toddler learning the steps and ways he and she can maneuver, you are with your Heavenly Father. Its your steps that produce more. Its your steps that produce growth. Sure you will stumble. You know you will fall. But don’t quit. Be like the child you once were and lift yourself back up. Carry on and continue to build your Faith. It is what we are designed for. Steady on. Paul told the people of Colossae “to be strengthened with all glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy (Colossians 1: 11 NLT).”
Godspeed, The Journeyman
Ps. Hoping that today’s story catches a warm memory in your heart. May you be compelled by His Spirit who guides you (John 16: 13) to move forward in the Lord. I can’t tell you your next step, but I know it is time to make it. For we walk by Faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5: 7 KJV).
