The sky was still dark. The commute had been steady and early. The rooster hadn’t crowed yet, when the door swung open after shutting the car off. The daily parking garage had just welcomed me from a weekend’s absence.
Stretching the legs and leaning a bit back, I glanced down at the rear door to my car. Only then did I realize, I hadn’t brought my work bag with me! That meant one of two things: continue into work and sit there with my arms folded or head back home and return a bit later. With a quick thought and a growl of annoyance, I knew the choice I had to make. Glancing upward in the garage I let out a chuckle and said, “ok Lord, I guess we need a little more time together before I start the day.”
All in all, my time in the early morning drive to work cost me two and a half hours and just over 90 miles. My initial reaction was of disbelief and annoyance. How could I leave a bag I had been carrying for 8 or 9 years? But the fact was, no one else was to blame save my own self. When Luke rumbles through a line, it hits home: “in your patience possess ye your soul (Luke 21:19 KJV).” After the moment of annoyance another chasm tried to creep into the day, yet I set my mind to deter any further thought down the field of self ridicule or chastisement. I had to accept it for what it was… an opportunity.
“But let patience have her perfect work… (James 1:4a KJV).” It became a resolve and a chuckle. Patience had an opportunity here. The annoyance and mistake would not ruin nor steal the day away. God would get the victory out of it. “That ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing (James 1:4b KJV).”
I can truly say I did not intend for my day to start in that fashion, but it was shown to be a test. If you don’t get your way will it ruin your day? Paul said, “and the Lord direct your hearts into the Love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ (II Thessalonians 3:5 KJV).” There was no “awe” moment in the rest of my travels, but it was time adapted to the Lord. I did not want the adversity to rob me of this. So my mistake became my offering.
The Psalmist sang this, “from the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the LORD’S name is to be praised (Psalm 113:3 KJV).” I know this isn’t a big deal. But it shows how we can face challenges and fight off even the simplest of things. Sometimes those Monday morning issues can set the week ablaze and we can miss so much. I hope you get an opportunity to redeem some moments that didn’t favor your thought process. In the end Christ’s victory will be spread throughout your life!
Godspeed, The Journeyman
