roots... by TJM

Pandemic mania has caught fire across the globe. From the origins of its roots in a Wuhan laboratory in China, onto the streets of New York, the ships of the seas, and the rainforest of the Amazon, this bug has caused an entire global assembly to come to a halt. All of our advancements could not contain it. As mentioned by the administration and others, this is the invisible enemy...

As we huddle in small groups and stay close to home except for the necessary trip to the markets, we have become a self reliant group. Fostered in seclusion, we make the proper adjustments to ride out the storm. Hopefully taking note of those closest to us and making sure they are not forgotten. The virus passes over.

Much like the spirit of death on the original Passover some 3000 years ago, the blood stained sills of the doors allowed those huddled in the home to remain untouched. Here we are millenia later and we have returned to the roots of hunkering down in our homes, just for different little bits of reasoning. Passover and Easter are a holy time in the Church. It recalls so much of our origins to be remembered and celebrated. Why do we do this and do that? It has been done this way, for all of these years, to remind us and future generations of all that took place two and three thousand years ago.

The Sacrificial Lamb of God. The passing on from death unto life. The hope of salvation. A blessed time of remembrance and joy. The conquering of death. As a Church we should look forward to these days each and every year.

But this year, as I extend my footprint out ever so slightly from beyond the market, I see that our national battlefields are being visited by an abundance of explorers. Whether the reasoning is to learn, walk, get out for a bit, it doesn’t really matter. The people are returning to the memorials that were placed there as reminders of what went on before. They were rediscovering their roots.

Joshua was coming to the end of his days on earth. He called the nation of Israel together one last time before he would pass on. In doing so, he charged them to think about who and what they serve. Remember where you have come from. Remember what has been done. Remember all of it. They were but 70 years removed from the first Passover. Joshua told them to choose the way they would go, the conquered or the Conquerer... he laid it out plainly.

In his house, he and his family had already made the choice, “ as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord (Joshua 24:15 KJV).” The decision was made. They were covenanted with God. A decision he had made long before, but was a necessary reminder to all those in the range of his voice. He would mark the day with writing it down and setting a stone by an oak tree as witness (v. 27 KJV).

The last chapter of the book of Joshua is a good read. It is a reminder to explore your roots, both the good and bad of them. Know where you stand and decide where you will go. “Now therefore put away, said he, the strange gods which are among you, and incline your heart unto the Lord God of Israel (v. 23 KJV). “

Godspeed, The JourneyMan

Ps. Today’s story comes from the flocks of people roaming the hallowed fields of Manassas’ battlefields. It is a stark reminder to where things have come from and where we need to go. May you have a blessed Easter! Jesus is Risen from the dead! Amen.

Joshua 24: 15 KJV “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land yes dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

Joshua 24: 23 KJV “Now therefore put away, said he, the strange gods which are among you, and incline your heart unto the Lord God of Israel.”

Joshua 24: 27 KJV “And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us; for it hath heard all the words of the Lord which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest ye deny your God.”
